“Codeine” from the album Here We Rest, released in 2011

I saw Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit opened up for Willie Nelson a few years ago and was immediately hooked. Their unique mix of southern rock and soul just does something right.

“Codeine” is about addiction and the havoc it wreaks. To amplify this havoc, the band mixes somber lyrics with an upbeat tune that leaves listeners wondering what they’re supposed to feel. To help with that, there really is no ending to the story of an addict trying to get help, losing everything, and hopefully stumbling toward the light.

See what else I’ve placed on Project 365 here.
