Project 365 Day #203
“Jump Around” from the album House of Pain, released in 1992
We all love “Jump Around” don’t we? With samples from the classics “Harlem Shuffle” and “Popeye the Hitchhiker,” “Jump Around” wasn’t exactly breaking any new ground in the hip hop scene. That said, the drama surrounding some of its samples, at least, makes it interesting.
But it’s more than just its samples. Sure, it’s a riveting blend of rap and rock before that was a common sound. Sure, its bouncy beat and Everlast growls give it a distinct musicality. Beyond all of that though is the clear American-Irish sound. It’s intentional and poignant and far more powerful than anyone has given it credit for.
I guess it doesn’t hurt that the video was filmed at the 1992 New York City St. Patrick’s Day Parade.
