Sometimes I feel curmudgeonly and think things like, “Satire is dead.” Then I see comedian Ben Hoffman’s Walker Wheeler Jr. perform his biting songs that point out much of what is wrong with popular country music. And now he’s tackling rock.
His latest banger is chock full of ZZ Top influenced musical stylings and lyrics that would make the most adroit rock musician blush. But really, he’s just saying what they’re saying without any clever euphemisms.
When you think about that, many of his songs take on a meaner tone (this one included). That might put people off. But I say the world, particularly those making music, need to hear a voice like Hoffman’s. It’s all the better that fans are also entertained.
