Project 365 Day #258
“Doo Wop (That Thing)” from the album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, released in 1998
The 90s gave us some amazing hip hop and R&B anthems. Lauryn Hill’s “Doo Wop (That Thing)” is one of the best. With a beat plucked from somewhere in the 60s and beefed up with that 90s flair, it is a unique and almost profound hit for the 90s. While many, other hits of the era are about sex, drugs, and rock n’ roll, Hill drops something of a warning to the masses, men and women.
When you combine this with the fact that the music is a mashup of 60s and 90s sounds and the video mirrors two women — one living in the 60s and the other in the 90s — you can see how complex and important the message behind this sublime hit really is.
