“A Holly Jolly Christmas” from the album Have a Holly Jolly Christmas, released in 1965

You may know him as Burl Ives, but to me he will always be Sam the Snowman from the 1964 Rankin-Bass Christmas special, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. You know that ode to capitalism sponsored by GE?

Looking at it through the lens of time and progress, it is easy to see that the message is shady. Also, Santa Claus is a dick in it, which has always been weird.

All that aside, Ives brings it as Sam, singing about how awesome Christmas is and how amazing Rudolph is and how terrible everyone else is.

At the end of the day, Sam the Snowman (Ives), is the voice of reason, the one I like to connect with. Connecting with Rudolph is too painful and too real.
